Happy Birthday, Future!

While this year in hip-hop has been stacked all around, no one has had a bigger 2015 than Future. The legend born Nayvadius DeMun Wilburn turns 32 years old today (Nov. 20).
Future needed to have a year like this. Although his sophomore album, Honest, was warmly received and featured “Move That Dope,” it put up disappointing numbers when it came to actually pushing units. Many saw the let down as an example of the record label draining Future’s creativity. His crumbling relationship with Ciara didn’t help either.
But then he put on that hat and turned up. Future proved his strength as a hitmaker through a streak of three impressive mixtapes: Monster, which featured “Commas”; Beast Mode, which had Zaytoven’s production and “Just Like Bruddas”; and 56 Nights, which featured the epics “March Madness” and “Trap N—-s.” The liberation of DJ Esco, the union of 808 Mafia and Future’s revival were a bit part of the reinvigoration of hip-hop in 2015.
This all translated well commercially. DS2, Future’s third album, pushed 151,000 units in its first week to become the rapper’s first No. 1 album. The too-big-to-fail collaboration with Drake, What a Time to Be Alive, came and also went No. 1.
And Future is still not done yet. He’s looking to release another project before the year is over.
